Leonardo da Vinci amava inventare mezzi di trasporto intelligenti. Sebbene gli siano stati attribuiti alcuni primi esperimenti di velivoli, le voci secondo cui avrebbe inventato la bicicletta si sono rivelate una fake news ante litteram: il celebre disegno di una bicicletta nel Codice Atlantico sembrerebbe infatti un falso.

Il centro storico di Firenze, iscritto nella Lista UNESCO del Patrimonio Mondiale, è grande poco più di 5 km quadrati, che arrivano oltre le mura della città, fino alla collina di San Miniato e a Piazzale Michelangelo. Si tratta di un’area facilmente percorribile a piedi: per fare un paragone, ti basti pensare che il centro storico di Venezia si estende per più di 7 km quadrati e quello di Roma arriva addirittura fino a 14. E molti dei monumenti più famosi sono concentrati in un’area ancora più piccola che, inoltre, è quasi del tutto pianeggiante.

Spesso la bicicletta è il modo più veloce, divertente ed ecologico per muoversi a Firenze, soprattutto per raggiungere le zone residenziali al di là dei viali di circonvallazione. Se non hai una bici, nessun problema: puoi usare il bike sharing! Scarica gratuitamente l’app RideMovi e salta su una delle loro Mobike arancioni che trovi un po’ ovunque e poi lasciala in una delle postazioni una volta giunto a destinazione. O se preferisci, puoi scegliere un monopattino (ti ricordiamo che il casco è obbligatorio per i minorenni). In entrambi i casi, rispetta il senso del traffico e fai attenzione ai pedoni. Quando parcheggi, ricordati di utilizzare i posti dedicati alle bici e di non bloccare il passaggio ai pedoni o al traffico stradale.

Naturalmente, Firenze dispone di un sistema di trasporto pubblico che comprende autobus e tramvia. Quest’ultima collega direttamente l’aeroporto di Firenze con la stazione ferroviaria centrale di Santa Maria Novella. Per utilizzare gli autobus e la tramvia è necessario acquistare un biglietto e convalidarlo immediatamente a bordo. Non scordarti quest’ultimo passaggio, perché spesso ci sono controlli e multe salate. I biglietti cartacei possono essere acquistati dai tabaccai o nelle edicole, e devono essere convalidati con l’apposita macchinetta appena saliti a bordo. Per acquistare i biglietti in modo digitale, puoi utilizzare l’app Autolinee Toscane (AT), che deve essere attivata online. E poi c’è “Tip Tap”, il nuovo sistema che ti consente di utilizzare una qualsiasi carta di credito contactless per pagare direttamente a bordo del veicolo in modo semplice e immediato, accostando la carta o lo smartphone al ricevitore; ricordati però che questo sistema permette l’acquisto di un solo biglietto per passeggero.

Se hai necessità di raggiungere Firenze in auto, ti consigliamo di parcheggiarla il prima possibile e di muoverti a piedi, in bici, o con i mezzi pubblici per il resto della giornata! Gran parte del centro storico è infatti zona a traffico limitato (ZTL); se vedi un display con una scritta in rosso “ZTL chiusa” significa che, salvo eccezioni, l’accesso è vietato… e le multe sono salate! Gli hotel e i parcheggi privati all’interno della ZTL possono rilasciare un pass per entrare, per cui informati prima del tuo arrivo. Meglio quindi parcheggiare ai margini della città e prendere i mezzi pubblici: a Firenze ci sono numerosi parcheggi scambiatori, di cui alcuni gratuiti, e collegati al centro dalla tranvia. Se sei di fretta o la tua destinazione ti sembra molto lontana, puoi sempre prendere un taxi! Non puoi chiamarli per strada come nei film, ma li troverai ad aspettarti presso le postazioni in giro per il centro, oppure puoi chiamarli per telefono ad uno dei seguenti numeri: +39 055 4390 +39 055 4242. This is an area that can easily be explored on foot: to make a comparison, just think that the historic center of Venice extends for more than 7 square km and that of Rome even reaches up to 14. And many of the most famous monuments are concentrated in an even smaller area which, moreover, is almost completely flat.

Often cycling is the fastest, funniest and most eco-friendly way to get around Florence, especially to reach the residential areas beyond the ring roads. The map also contains information on the "Bicipolitana" project, which indicates which are the safest routes with little traffic.
If you don't have a bike, no problem: you can use bike sharing! Download the RideMovi app for free and jump on one of their orange Mobikes that you can find almost everywhere and then leave it at one of the stations once you reach your destination. Or if you prefer, you can choose a scooter (we remind you that helmets are mandatory for minors). In both cases, respect the direction of traffic and pay attention to pedestrians. When parking, remember to use the spaces dedicated to bicycles and not to block the passage of pedestrians or road traffic.

Of course, Florence has a public transport system that includes buses and trams. The latter directly connects Florence airport with the central railway station of Santa Maria Novella. To use buses and trams you must purchase a ticket and validate it immediately on board. Don't forget this last step, because there are often checks and heavy fines. Paper tickets can be purchased from tobacconists or newsstands, and must be validated with the appropriate machine as soon as you get on board. To purchase tickets digitally, you can use the Autolinee Toscane (AT) app, which must be activated online. And then there is "Tip Tap", the new system that allows you to use any contactless credit card to pay directly on board the vehicle in a simple and immediate way, by touching the card or smartphone to the receiver; However, remember that this system allows the purchase of only one ticket per passenger.

If you need to reach Florence by car, we recommend parking it as soon as possible and moving around on foot, by bike, or by public transport for the rest of the day! Much of the historic center is in fact a limited traffic zone (ZTL); if you see a display with the wording "ZTL closed" in red it means that, barring exceptions, access is prohibited... and the fines are heavy! Hotels and private car parks within the ZTL can issue a pass to enter, so inform yourself before your arrival. It is therefore better to park on the outskirts of the city and take public transport: in Florence there are numerous parking lots, some of which are free, and connected to the center by the tram.
